The American Civil War Artillery Relic Collection

Shot Filled Hotchkiss Shell

This Hotchkiss shell had been fired during the battle but it never exploded properly and cracked into two pieces upon impact with the ground, revealing it's contents of lead case-shot balls and matrix. Both pieces are included.   Although the number of case shot balls was small, isolating the bursting charge to their rear with an iron plate threw them forward when fired, with even deadlier force than other styles of case shot.  The Hotchkiss shell was the most common projectile fired from the Model 1861, also known as the Ordnance Rifle.

This rare Hotchkiss relic is in excellent condition, the two pieces fit perfectly together and it is coated for preservation.

Recovery location is unknown, it was preserved as a pristine example of a Hotchkiss Shell and was purchased as museum surplus.

SOLD OUT

Cannon ball, Gettysburg, used by Moody's Madison Battery positioned his right gun near the Trostle Farm and fired against Union artillery on Cemetery Ridge and Little Round Top with his four  24-pounder cannons on July 3.  The intensity of the two day fight showed in the battery's casualty figures, losing 28% of the men engaged. It did not, however, lose any guns.  This cannon ball is approx. 1-7/8" diameter.  Note: NO grape shot was used at Gettysburg, NO plates were ever recovered, those having a hole in the center for a bolt. One cannon ball is available and was recorded as being recovered from the Little Roundtop area in the collection.  This iron cannon ball was used in canister shot, as ALL cannon balls of this type recovered in Gettysburg were used.

$125.95

1" iron canister ball, Gettysburg, Pickett's Charge, 6 pieces available.  The cannons firing this type canister were double loaded at Pickett's Charge and decimated the Confederate wave as it marched past the Codori Farm during the afternoon of July 3, 1863 towards the stone wall.
