Countless volumes have been written on millions of different subjects about the American Civil War. It began in the late 1850's when books were written about state agriculture and the slave population and cotton crops of the South, such as Helper's book, The Impeding Crisis Of The South and continued during the war with the boys in blue and gray writing about their own participation in the battles and their generals and commanders writing their memoirs after the war ended. Today, books written on the Civil War take into account and reference those same 19th century books and their authors can offer new incite. They write a complete account of a regiment, hero, campaign or specific battle using, in some cases, minute-by-minute eyewitness accounts accompanied by war department records. Such accessible detail in such abundance was not available 140 years ago. The books we have selected below are for enjoyment and reference. It is difficult to post a limited about of Civil War books online when you have thousands to select from. Our online selections will change on the first of each month, you may browse past monthly selections at any time. If you are looking for a specific subject, please use the search box located at the bottom of this page. |
