No. 11 My Dear and Far of Girl Wear a great manny miles apart and cannot see eachother very soon yet we should feal glad that we could can write to eachother and know how we are all getting along I received a letter from you and your Mother last night No 7 dated July 4 I was glad to hear from you for I had been looking for one for some time I was glad to hear that you are all well at home and I should not have tired of reading your letter if it had been 4 times as long We are still at the old place We stand picket about half of the time we are out 4 days at a time it is in a good place where we go we are quite safe we are on the farm owned by Charles Friend and known as White Hill Plantation the was about 100 slaves kept at this place but when the union forces got hear only about 18 were found one old man has been here 47 years and was 11 years old when he came here we are geting along first rate my health is better than it was but is not first rate things remain about the same in part of Petersburg artilery shots and picket fireing is heard at times all along the line last Saturday afternoon a building in Petersburg was set on fire from our artilery shels another in the evening and both were in plain view of the fire am very glad to hear that Hattie likes to go to school and learn so well tell her that she must learn to read these verses that I send in this letter for it is about a man that was kiled in Getisburg were I helped fight the rebels and where I found them pictures that i sent to her last year I received your Mothers letter No 6 dated June 17 a few days ago so I have got all that she has sent me everything in your letter came safe I cannot stop to write any more now but will again soon write to me after with my love to your Mother and Hattie I close so good by feal the fireout
